Web 3.0 An Upgrade To The Internet

Darrius Singleton 45

The web can be characterized as having three stages and un-benounced to the average individual we are swiftly engaging in major technological changes to the internet.

The internet is expanding in a sense. For years we have heard about drones, robot, self driving cars, and virtual reality. We are at a point where the technology behind the scenes is smarter, more interconnected, and built a more advanced internet.

Look back at the different stages of the internet, you can slowly see the subtle changes.

Web 1.0

Web 1.0 was the beginning of the internet spanning from 1991 until 2003. The internet was more about participants as consumers and sharing information. It can be classified as most read only.

Web 1.0:

  1. Static pages
  2. Static server file-system.
  3. HTML, Tables and Frames to align page elements.
  4. Created by developers to share information

Web 2.0

In 2003 a quick evolution happened, at least in my generation. I’m sure most 90’s babies remember Tom From Myspace. Myspace marked the beginning of social and interactive evolution of the internet.

Before myspace the web was mostly just information. Myspace added the ability to connect with friends, share pictures, and communicate with others online.

During this the Web 2.0 internet payment systems established themselves as well. New more interactive sites like Ebay.com, Amazon.com, and Google rose to prominence.

In a sense it was the birth of ecommerce. Users could now order items and receive them in the mail. Mobile apps became popular allowing the ability to find out and order anything your want from any where in world.

The additions to the internet made it possible for the user to actually become the creator. This phenomena lead to Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram dominating the web and peoples mobile phones.

Developers can now monetize users and the data they provide. Creators eventually find a way to monetize their creations and followers.

Traits of Web 2.0

  1. Monetize data and users
  2. XHTML and JavaScript frameworks
  3. Move toward dynamic content
  4. Owner created algorithms decided what content is shown
  5. Podcast
  6. Blogs
  7. Hashtags
  8. Social networking
  9. Social media
  10. Cloud computing

Web 3.0

The new upgrade to the internet known as Web3 or Web 3.0 is creating a “sharing economy” some refer to it as the “the world’s information”. In this paradigm information is shared on meta data level. This allows the world to work more cooperatively and create more efficient systems.

The internet of things commonly refer to as “IoT”. What is the IoT? Basically, everything we use in the world currently but, they will have the ability to communicate and share data with each other. .

Decentralized data coupled with artificial intelligence will allow for things to learn patterns and behaviors, essentially, making them smart. The world would seemingly adopt to the individual giving a personal feel through everyday interactions.

The sharing of data leads to another major technological breakthrough that is blockchain and cryptocurrency. This is a major shift that can truly have a global effect on economies and communities of all sizes.

Blockchain creates an immutable and transparent trust layer that even the scales of life. Blockchain establishes an un-hackable and universal verifiable distributed ledger to anyone who wants to see.

Cryptocurrency is powered with the blockchain data structure under the hood. Cryptocurrency allows for the decentralization of data and in most cases, power.

Users can take ownership of their data in-turn increasing their privacy. Cryptocurrency theoretically gives users the option to plug into a system, allowing the system to use their data. The user benefits from the stored value in the cryptocurrency.

I will go more in-depth on Web3 as it evolves. Follow me to stay informed.

We are still in the process of building Web 3.0. Hence why I’m writing about it. I want people to be aware of the coming changes. You can be apart of upgrading the internet and contribute to future society.
